Barcode LabelThe end result of barcode printing is the barcode label. There are many key factors in selecting barcode label material; what is the core inside diameter size, is the label orientation wound with the labels facing in or out, and are the barcode labels on a roll or in fan-folded packs? Barcode labels are used in two types of thermal printing: Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer. Direct ThermalThe main difference between thermal transfer and direct thermal printing is that direct thermal printing does not use a thermal transfer ribbon. Direct Thermal printing requires the use of a heat sensitive substrate which is activated by the print head to create a black image. Thermal TransferThermal Transfer printing requires the use of a thermal transfer ink ribbon. The ink from the ribbon is transferred (due to heat and pressure) to the substrate. Thermal Transfer printing is more expensive in the short run but cost effective overall because the ribbon helps to extend the life of the print head. ApplicationsBarcode labels come in various material types to cover a range of applications: Paper LabelsPaper labels are the most common and least expensive face stocks for thermal printing. Paper is best suited for indoor use and in the following applications: shipping, price tags, and inventory. Paper TagsPaper tags are commonly used for equipment labels, price tags, and in manufacturing in process tagging. Polypropylene LabelsPolypropylene labels and tags are recommended for applications requiring a higher degree of durability than paper. Ingredient labels are one such example. Polyester LabelsPolyester, yes the same stuff in your old leisure suite, is advised for the toughest labeling applications: outdoor, circuit boards, serial numbers, irregular surfaces, and underwater. Synthetic TagsSynthetic tags are used for special applications such as landscaping, lumber, and other outdoor applications. Synthetic labels resist moisture, temperature, chemicals, oil, and dirt better than paper labels and are also more expensive. Label Experts
There are many companies that have experts available to help you with your barcode labeling needs. Barcode printer resellers are a good choice for expert advice on barcode labeling. There are resellers in every major city in the country. They work with all kinds of labeling applications and are very willing to offer help. Make sure you give these resellers the business, however, and don't go to the cheapest internet supplier. They may not give you help the next time you have a labeling application if you "steal" their expertise. |
